Anti-HIV Cream Still a DreamOne strategy being pursued is to find a way to block HIV from binding to cells. The virus actually binds to specific receptors on cell surfaces. Successful results using monkeys are reported in the current issue of Science. The success was achieved by applying a solution containing specially synthesized molecules that blocked HIV's ability to infect target cells in the vagina. It protected 12 out of 15 monkeys. Comment: Science editorialized that: "Microbicide Shuts the Door on HIV." This is an oversimplification of what is turning out to be a very difficult medical challenge. A microbicide is supposed to kill a microbe and this anti-HIV cream does not do that. This line of research is fraught with unanswered questions. Read entire article... |
