The Side Benefits of Obesity SurgeryStudy: A meta-analysis was done combining data from 136 published studies involving more than 22,000 patients who underwent bariatric surgery. Weight loss was successful after the surgery. Crystal Ball in Diabetes - A1C TestSummary: A study has been done to learn the relationship between the A1C level in diabetes and the development of large vessel cardiovascular disease. The study analyzed all of the available relevant reports in the medical literature. (This type of analysis is called a meta-analysis) The meta-analysis encompassed 3 studies of type 1 diabetes and 10 studies of type 2 diabetes. An elevation in the A1C level was found associated with an increased risk for cardiovascular disease in persons with diabetes. Comments: This report and the next one (below) show that the A1C level can now be added to the list of other clearly established indicators of cardiovascular risk, such as the blood pressure and the cholesterol level. The presence or absence of diabetes is likely to become less important than the level of A1C in the assessment of cardiovascular risk -- the risk of a heart attack or stroke.
